How to Make Anki Flashcards With ChatGPT (Import Ready)
To make Anki flashcards with ChatGPT, paste your notes and ask it to write one question-and-answer pair per fact as CSV, with the front and back separated by a semicolon. Save that text as a .txt or .csv file, then in Anki go to File, then Import, pick the file, and map Field 1 to Front and Field 2 to Back. The whole thing takes about 10 minutes once you have the prompt.
If you'd rather skip the prompt, the CSV and the import screen entirely, FlashDeck turns pasted notes into cards in seconds and schedules your reviews for you: Build my study plan.
What you need
Short checklist before you start:
- Your notes as text. Typed notes, a study guide, or text copied from slides or a PDF. Photos of handwriting need typing up first (or use a text-recognition tool).
- ChatGPT. The free version works for this.
- Anki. Free on desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux), on the web via AnkiWeb, and on Android. The iPhone app is paid.
- A plain text editor. Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit set to plain text (Mac).
Desktop Anki is the easiest place to import. Your cards then sync to your phone.
The prompt that makes clean cards
Bad prompt: "make flashcards." You'll get 40 cards that each cram three facts together.
Here's the anki flashcards ChatGPT prompt that actually works. Copy it:
"Turn the notes below into Anki flashcards. Rules: one fact per card. Front is a short question. Back is the shortest correct answer, under 15 words. Use only information in my notes; don't add anything. Skip anything that isn't a fact, definition or formula. Output as plain text, one card per line, front and back separated by a semicolon. No header, no numbering, no extra text. Don't use semicolons inside the cards.
Notes: [paste]"
Why each rule matters
- One fact per card: cards with three answers are impossible to grade honestly.
- Short backs: you should be able to say the answer in one breath.
- Only my notes: stops ChatGPT inventing stuff your teacher never said.
- Semicolon separator: commas show up inside answers all the time; semicolons rarely do.
Bonus: cloze cards
Want fill-in-the-blank? Ask: "Write each fact as a sentence with the key term wrapped like {{c1::term}}. One per line." Then import into Anki's Cloze note type.
More chatgpt flashcard prompts
- "Make cards only from the bolded terms in these notes."
- "Make formula cards: front is the name, back is the formula and what each letter means."
- "Make 'why' cards: front asks why something happens, back gives the reason in one line."
Formatting as CSV for Anki
ChatGPT's output should look like this:
What organelle makes ATP?;Mitochondria
What is the formula for density?;Mass divided by volume
Year the Berlin Wall fell?;1989
Now save it:
- Copy ChatGPT's output.
- Paste into a plain text editor.
- Save as
bio-chapter3.txt(or.csv). Make sure it's saved as UTF-8 if your editor asks, so symbols and accents import correctly.
Quick check: every line should have exactly one semicolon. If a line has two, fix it now or it'll import weird.
Importing into Anki step by step
How to make an Anki deck with ChatGPT output, on desktop:
- Open Anki and create a deck (Create Deck at the bottom). Name it, for example, "Bio Ch3."
- Click File, then Import.
- Choose your .txt or .csv file.
- On the import screen, set the field separator to Semicolon.
- Set Note type to Basic (or Cloze if you made cloze cards).
- Set Deck to the one you made.
- Check the field mapping: Field 1 goes to Front, Field 2 goes to Back.
- Click Import. Anki shows how many notes it added.
Anki's import screen has changed a little between versions, so if a label looks different, look for the separator and field mapping options; they're always there.
How to make Quizlet flashcards with ChatGPT
Same prompt, but tell ChatGPT to separate front and back with a tab, or a character of your choice, and cards with a new line. In Quizlet, create a set, choose the Import option, paste, and match the separators. Done.
Checking cards for mistakes
Real talk: this is the step nobody does, and it's the one that matters most. ChatGPT is confident even when it's wrong. And you have to judge 60 cards with fresh eyes while also, you know, not knowing the material yet.
Spend 5 minutes on this checklist:
- Does each answer match your notes exactly?
- Any card with two facts? Split it.
- Any card you can answer without knowing the topic? Delete it.
- Any fact your teacher stressed that's missing? Add it.
- Formulas: units and symbols right?
FlashDeck skips the CSV and import dance. You paste notes (up to 30,000 characters or 20 pages), it writes one card per fact, definition or formula using only what you pasted, and you can delete any card you don't like. Then it shows you only the cards you're about to forget each day. Build my study plan

Cards from your notes, without the CSV
The ChatGPT route works, but it's prompt, paste, save, import, fix. With FlashDeck you paste your notes once and get cards in seconds, then a review of about ten minutes a day that brings back missed cards tomorrow. You can share the deck with your study group with one link.
FAQ
How do I get ChatGPT to make Anki flashcards?
Paste your notes and ask for one fact per card, with front and back separated by a semicolon, one card per line, and no extra text. Then save the output as a .txt or .csv file and import it into Anki.
What format does Anki import?
Anki imports plain text and CSV files where each line is one note and fields are separated by a character like a comma, semicolon or tab. You pick the separator and map fields to Front and Back on the import screen.
How do I ask ChatGPT to make flashcards from a PDF?
Copy the PDF's text and paste it into the prompt, a chapter at a time so it doesn't skip sections. Tell it to use only that text, and check the cards against the PDF afterward.
Can I make Quizlet flashcards with ChatGPT?
Yes. Ask ChatGPT for one card per line with a tab or other separator between term and definition, then use Quizlet's import option and match the separators.
What's the fastest way to make Anki flashcards?
The ChatGPT CSV method is fast once you have the prompt saved. If you don't need Anki specifically, pasting notes into an app that writes and schedules the cards for you is quicker still.
