How to Make Flashcards in Notion (and Where It Falls Short)
Yes, you can make flashcards in Notion, but Notion doesn't have a flashcard feature. You build them yourself: either with toggles (question as the toggle title, answer hidden inside) or with a database where each row is a card. It works great for storing and organizing cards. What it can't do on its own is tell you which cards to review today, and that's the part that actually makes flashcards work.
If your Notion flashcard page looks amazing but you have no idea which cards you're forgetting, FlashDeck takes the same notes and schedules the review for you: Build my study plan.
Can you make flashcards in Notion?
Short answer: yes, with workarounds.
- Does Notion have flashcards? Not as a built-in card type with a study mode.
- Can you make flashcards on Notion anyway? Yes. Toggles and databases get you most of the way.
- Can Notion AI make flashcards? If you have Notion AI, you can ask it to turn a page of notes into question-and-answer pairs, then paste them into toggles or a database. Always check what it writes against your notes before you trust it.
The question is less "can I" and more "which setup." Here's both.
Method 1: toggle cards
The fastest way to make flashcards in Notion. Takes about 30 seconds to set up.
Steps
- Make a new page. Name it by unit: "Bio Unit 3: Cells."
- Type
>and a space to create a toggle (or/toggle). - Type the question as the toggle title: "What does the mitochondria do?"
- Press Enter inside the toggle and type the answer.
- Collapse it. Repeat.
Make toggle cards better
- Use toggle headings (
/toggle heading) to group cards by topic inside the page. - Keep one fact per toggle. A toggle that opens into a paragraph is a note, not a flashcard.
- Quiz with everything collapsed. Say the answer out loud, then open it. Opening first and nodding doesn't count.
- Add a ✅ or ❌ emoji after each attempt if you want a quick visual of what you missed.
Toggle cards are perfect for a quick vocab list or a 20-card quiz tomorrow. They get messy past a hundred or so cards.
Method 2: a flashcard database
This is the setup people mean when they search "Notion flashcard template." It scales way better.
Build it
- Type
/databaseand choose Table view (full page). - Rename the columns:
| Column | Type | What goes in it |
|---|---|---|
| Question | Title | "What is osmosis?" |
| Answer | Text | "Water moving across a membrane from high to low water concentration" |
| Subject | Select | Bio, Chem, History |
| Unit | Select | Unit 1, Unit 2 |
| Status | Select | New, Learning, Got it |
| Last reviewed | Date | Today's date after review |
- Add a Gallery view. In the gallery settings, set the card preview to none and only show the Question property. Now each card shows just the question, and you click in to see the answer.
- Add filtered views: "Bio only," "Status is not Got it," and so on.
Studying from the database
Open the gallery view, read a question, answer out loud, open the card to check, update Status. It's clunky compared to a real flashcard app, but it's organized, searchable and very aesthetic if that's your thing. (For design ideas, see aesthetic flashcard ideas.)
Add a review date column
This is the upgrade most Notion flashcard templates skip, and it's how you fake spaced repetition.
The manual spacing system
Add two properties:
- Box (Select): 1, 2, 3, 4
- Next review (Date)
Rules:
| If you... | Move to | Next review |
|---|---|---|
| Missed it | Box 1 | Tomorrow |
| Got it from Box 1 | Box 2 | In 3 days |
| Got it from Box 2 | Box 3 | In a week |
| Got it from Box 3 | Box 4 | In 2 to 3 weeks |
Then make a view filtered to Next review is on or before today. That's your daily study list.
Can a formula do it?
You can write a Notion formula that adds days to Last reviewed based on Box, using dateAdd(). It works, but you still have to update the Box by hand every single time. And that's the catch.
Here's where Notion flashcards usually break down: you're the scheduler. Every card means judging yourself, changing the box, and doing the date math. FlashDeck does that step for you: tap Knew it or Missed it, and it schedules the next review automatically (1 day, 3 days, a week, then longer; misses come back tomorrow). Build my study plan
What Notion can't do
Notion is an incredible notes app. It's just not a study app. Honest list:
- No built-in study mode. No flip animation, no "next card," no shuffle unless you rig it.
- No automatic spaced repetition. You set the dates. If you skip a few days, your system quietly falls apart.
- No stats that show what you're forgetting. You can count Status tags, but you won't see "you missed these 12 cards this week" without building it.
- Hard on your phone. Opening and closing database cards on mobile gets tedious.
- Easy to over-decorate. Two hours on icons and cover images is procrastination with a nice font.
None of this makes Notion bad. It's just the wrong tool for the review part.
When to move cards to a spaced repetition app
Keep your notes in Notion. Move the review somewhere that schedules it when:
- You have more than about 100 cards per subject.
- You keep skipping review because updating dates is annoying.
- A test is close and you need to know exactly what you'd fail right now.
- You're studying on your phone in between classes or on the bus.
How to move them
Your database can be exported, and a toggle page can be copied as text. Most flashcard apps (Anki, Quizlet, FlashDeck) accept pasted text, so you don't need to rebuild anything. If you're weighing apps, comparing how they handle cloze cards is a good test, and cloze deletion flashcards explains that format.
Keep Notion for notes, let FlashDeck handle the review
Copy your Notion notes page, paste it into FlashDeck, and it writes one question-and-answer card per fact, definition or formula, using only what you pasted. Every day it shows only the cards you're about to forget, in about ten minutes, and tracks learned, due and missed per deck, which is exactly what flashcards in Notion can't do on their own.
FAQ
Does Notion have a flashcard feature?
No, Notion doesn't have a built-in flashcard type or study mode. You can build flashcards with toggles or a database, and many students use templates. Scheduling reviews is up to you.
How do I make flashcards on Notion quickly?
Use toggles: type > and a space, write the question as the toggle title and put the answer inside. It's the fastest method for a short list. For bigger decks, use a database with Question and Answer columns.
Can Notion AI make flashcards from my notes?
If your plan includes Notion AI, you can ask it to turn notes into question-and-answer pairs and then paste them into toggles or a database. Check every card against your notes, because AI can miss or reword things. You still have to schedule the reviews yourself.
Can you do spaced repetition in Notion?
Sort of. Add a Box column and a Next review date, then filter a view to cards due today. It works, but you update every card by hand, which is why many students move the review part to a dedicated app.
Is Notion better than Anki or Quizlet for flashcards?
Notion is better for organizing notes and making things look nice. Anki and other spaced repetition apps are better at scheduling reviews. A common setup is taking notes in Notion and reviewing in a flashcard app.
