How to Make Flashcards on Canva (Free, Printable)

6 min read · FlashDeck

Here's how to make flashcards on Canva: search "flashcard" in Canva's templates, pick a design, put the question on one page and the answer on the next, duplicate pages for each card, then download as a PDF Print and print double-sided. It's free on a standard Canva account and takes about 20 minutes for a small deck once you have the layout set.

Canva is great for making cards look good, but typing 80 cards by hand is slow; if you just want cards from your notes fast, FlashDeck writes them for you: Build my study plan.

What you need

Can you make cards on Canva for free? Yes. Plenty of flashcard templates and elements are free. Some templates and features are marked as Pro, so filter for free ones if you don't have Pro. If you're a K-12 student, check whether your school gives you Canva for Education.

Pick a flashcard template

Find a free flashcard template on Canva

  1. Open Canva and type "flashcard" in the search bar on the home page.
  2. Browse the flashcard templates. You'll see cute, minimalist, kid-style, and aesthetic flashcards.
  3. Click one you like and hit Customize this template.

Or start with a custom size (index cards)

Want to make index cards in Canva? Click Create a design → Custom size and use:

Tip: for printing several cards per sheet, make a Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 design and lay out 4 to 8 cards in a grid with thin cut lines.

Design the front and back

Here's how to make front and back flashcards on Canva so they stay matched.

Front (question side)

Back (answer side)

Keep the design simple. Aesthetic flashcards are fun, but a busy background makes text harder to read when you're tired. Pick two colors and one font family and stop there.

Make a full deck fast

This is where most people give up. Ways to speed it up:

  1. Build one perfect card, front and back, on pages 1 and 2.
  2. Duplicate both pages (the duplicate button above each page) for every card.
  3. Edit the text only. Don't touch the design again.
  4. Use Bulk Create if you have it. On plans that include it, Canva's Bulk Create lets you paste a table of questions and answers and generate one design per row. Put questions in one column and answers in another, then connect each column to a text box.

Even with all that, a 60-card deck is a lot of typing and formatting. And making the cards isn't studying yet. You still have to quiz yourself, figure out which ones you keep missing, and remember to come back to them.

FlashDeck skips straight to the studying. Paste your notes, a study guide or PDF text (up to 30,000 characters or 20 pages), and it writes one card per fact, definition or formula using only what you pasted. Each day it shows only the cards you're about to forget. Build my study plan

Print double-sided correctly

This is the step that ruins everyone's first batch. Here's how to print double sided flashcards on Canva so the answer actually lands behind the right question.

One card per page

If each page is one card (front on page 1, back on page 2), it's easy:

  1. Click Share → Download.
  2. Choose PDF Print.
  3. In your printer settings, choose two-sided, and flip on short edge for landscape cards or long edge for portrait.
  4. Print one test sheet first.

Several cards per sheet (the mirror trick)

When you print 4 or 8 cards per sheet, the backs need to be mirrored left to right. Think about it: when you flip the paper over, the top-left card becomes the top-right.

So on your back page:

Front page layout Back page layout
Card 1 · Card 2 Card 2 · Card 1
Card 3 · Card 4 Card 4 · Card 3

Then print two-sided with flip on long edge (for portrait Letter or A4). Always test with one sheet before printing the full deck.

No double-sided printer?

Print all the fronts, put the stack back in the tray face-down (check which way your printer feeds), then print the backs. Or fold-style: put front and back side by side and fold each card in half.

When digital cards are faster

If you'd rather not print, make a Presentation in Canva and use one page for the question and the next for the answer. Present it full screen and tap to reveal. That's the simplest way to make interactive flashcards on Canva. You can also share the design link with your class.

When to skip Canva entirely

Canva wins when the cards are a project: a class presentation, a teaching resource, or a set for a younger sibling. For your own exam prep, it has two problems:
