How to Print Flashcards Double Sided (Word, Canva, Docs)
To print flashcards double sided, put your questions on page 1 and your answers on page 2 in the same grid, but mirror the order of the answers (swap left and right columns), then print with "Flip on long edge." That mirroring step is the part everyone misses, and it's why backs don't line up. The same logic works in Word, Canva and Google Docs.
If you're printing 100 cards because you don't know which 20 you actually need to study, FlashDeck can show you exactly those: Build my study plan.
The setup: grid and card size
Before you open any app, decide two things.
1. Card size
| Option | Cards per page | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 2 × 2 grid on letter/A4 | 4 big cards | Diagrams, long answers |
| 2 × 3 grid | 6 cards | Most subjects |
| 2 × 4 grid | 8 cards | Vocab, short facts |
| Real 3×5 index cards | 1 per sheet | That classic index card feel |
Letter paper (8.5 × 11 in) in the US and Canada, A4 in the UK. Set this in the app first or everything shifts.
2. Paper
- Regular paper: fine for home printing, flimsy to shuffle.
- Cardstock (around 65 to 110 lb, or roughly 180 to 300 gsm): feels like real flashcards. Check what your printer supports first.
The mirror rule (read this twice)
When you flip a page on its long edge, the left side of the front ends up behind the right side of the back. So:
- Front page, row 1: Q1 | Q2
- Back page, row 1: A2 | A1
Every row's answers go in reverse left-to-right order. That's it. That's the trick.
Print double sided in Word
Make the grid
- Layout → Margins → Narrow (0.5 in).
- Insert → Table → 2 columns × 4 rows (for 8 cards).
- Select the table, right-click → Table Properties → Row → Specify height, set to "Exactly" around 2.4 in so rows don't stretch.
- Center text: Layout (Table) → Align Center.
- Type questions on page 1.
- Press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on Mac) for a new page, paste the same table, and type answers in mirrored order.
Tip: Word's Mailings → Labels with a business card or index card template also makes a clean grid if you already have perforated card sheets.
Print it
- File → Print.
- Change "Print One Sided" to "Print on Both Sides – Flip pages on long edge."
- No duplex printer? Choose "Manually Print on Both Sides." Word prints the fronts, then tells you to reinsert the stack.
Print double sided in Canva
- Search Canva templates for "flashcards" or start a Letter/A4 doc.
- Use a grid or table element, or line up text boxes with the guides.
- Page 1 = questions. Duplicate the page (Duplicate page button), then swap each row's left and right boxes and change the text to answers.
- Share → Download → PDF Print.
- Open the PDF and print with two-sided, flip on long edge.
Canva also offers printing through its own print service in some places, but for a study deck, home printing is usually quicker. Designing? Grab palette ideas from aesthetic flashcard ideas or set up a system with color coded flashcards.
Print from Google Docs
- File → Page setup → Letter or A4, margins 0.5 in.
- Insert → Table → 2 × 4.
- Right-click the table → Table properties → set a minimum row height so cells are even, and align text to the middle.
- Questions on page 1. Insert → Break → Page break. Answers on page 2, mirrored.
- File → Print → More settings → Two-sided → long edge. (On some systems this setting lives under "Print using system dialog.")
How to print flashcards at home without duplex
- Print only odd pages (the fronts).
- Flip the stack and put it back in the tray. Every printer's tray orientation is different, so do step 3 first.
- Test with one page: draw an arrow on a blank sheet, note which way it went in and which way it came out.
- Print even pages (the backs).
Make the fronts and backs line up
Most double sided flashcard fails come down to these:
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Answers are on the wrong card | You forgot to mirror columns. Swap left and right on the back page. |
| Backs are upside down | You used "flip on short edge." Switch to long edge (or rotate the back page 180°). |
| Everything is a few mm off | Printers shift slightly. Use bigger margins inside each cell and center text. |
| The table spilled onto a new page | Fix row height to "Exactly" and reduce the font. |
| Cardstock jammed | Use the rear or manual feed tray, one sheet at a time. |
Flip on long edge vs short edge
- Portrait page + long edge: mirror left/right (the standard setup above).
- Portrait page + short edge: the backs land upside down and the row order changes, so you'd have to rework the whole back page. Not worth it.
Pick long edge, mirror left/right, and you're good.
How to print double sided index cards (3×5)
- Set paper size to 3 × 5 in (or "Index card") in your doc and your printer settings.
- One card per page: front on page 1, back on page 2, front on page 3...
- Feed cards through the manual or rear tray.
- Print one test card before the whole stack.
Quizlet flashcards
Quizlet has a print option for sets on its website. The layouts it offers can change over time, so check its print settings for a flashcard layout; if there isn't one that suits you, copy your terms and definitions into the Word or Docs table above and follow the mirror rule.
Printing works. But a physical stack can't tell you which cards you're about to forget, so most people end up reviewing all 80 every night. Paste the same notes into FlashDeck and it makes one card per fact, then each day shows only the ones that are due. Tap Knew it or Missed it and the schedule sorts itself. Build my study plan
Cut and store your cards
Cutting
- Paper trimmer > scissors, if you have access to one (school library, art room).
- Cut along the grid lines. Light gray table borders make this easier than no borders.
- Stack a few sheets and cut together, only if everything lined up in your test print.
Storing
- Binder rings: punch a hole in the corner, one ring per unit.
- Index card box with dividers: "New," "Learning," "Know it."
- Rubber band + sticky note label per topic.
- Envelope taped inside your notebook for cards you're carrying to class.
Printing a diagram? The same double sided trick works for blank-and-labeled diagram pairs. See image occlusion flashcards.
Print less, study what's due
Paste your notes into FlashDeck and it writes one question-and-answer card per fact, using only what you pasted. It shows only the cards you're about to forget, in about ten minutes a day, so the stack you print (or skip printing) is the stack that matters.
FAQ
How do I print flashcards double sided on Word?
Make a table grid with questions on page 1 and answers on page 2, with each row's answers in reversed left-right order. Then go to File → Print and pick "Print on Both Sides – Flip pages on long edge." If your printer can't print both sides, choose manual double-sided printing.
How do I print double sided flashcards on Canva?
Design the questions page, duplicate it, swap each row's left and right boxes and change the text to answers. Download as PDF Print and print two-sided with flip on long edge. Test one page before printing the whole deck.
Why don't my flashcard fronts and backs line up?
Usually because the answer columns weren't mirrored, or the printer used short-edge flipping. Mirror left and right on the back page and choose long edge. Small shifts of a millimeter or two are normal, so center text with padding in each cell.
Can I print on 3×5 index cards at home?
Many home printers can, using the manual or rear feed tray. Set the page size to 3 × 5 in both your document and printer settings, and print one test card first. Put the front and back on alternating pages.
Is it better to print flashcards or use an app?
Printed cards are great if you like writing and shuffling by hand. Apps are better at scheduling review and tracking which cards you keep missing. Many students do both: print a deck for class and use an app for daily review.
